I’ve been either pregnant or nursing (or both!) for more than four years. My body has gone through many changes. I do not have many stretch marks but my belly button is a little saggy. I’m thinner than I was before I became a mom, though my hips have widened.
What size of bra and undies to I wear? I have no idea. I will tell you now that the items in my top drawer have been more than a little neglected. I recently took inventory and realize that I still wear the granny panties I bought to pack in my hospital bag almost four years ago. The big ones from Walmart that fit an extra absorbent pad and that I didn’t mind staining. I also came to realize that have not worn a non-nursing bra in almost four years.
I’ve never been a thong lover or an under-wire wearer. Comfort, for me, is one of the most important factors in buying any type of clothing–but especially where intimates are concerned. My granny panties and nursing bras certainly are comfy but they’re bordering on pathetic. I have one “cute” leopard print nursing bra but a lot of the others are beige and dingy. Some are hand me downs that never quite fit properly.
There’s got to be a better way to be comfortable.
I have the pleasure of teaching Camilla, one of the founders, and her adorable daughter, in a postnatal yoga class. She recently brought me a red Nana bra and matching Iris Hipster undies. Possibly the most comfortable underwear set I’ve ever owned.
The perfect bra, as far as I’m concerned, it’s one I forget I’m wearing. I don’t want to feel it. The Miel Sisters bra and underwear are super cute but they disappear beneath my clothing. I’m mostly dressed in yoga pants these days so I love that they’re seamless. They don’t leave the panty lines my granny briefs do!
The Nana bra has two options for the straps, regular or crossed in the back. I found both equally comfy. This bra looks very simple. There is no under-wire or padding. No pushup mechanisms (if there was, I assure you, I’d never have agreed to test it out!) It is also so feminine. And like the rest of the Miel products, it has a bit of a sexy flair (the Miel Sisters credit their Latin-ness!) I lived in my Nana for days before I finally washed it. And I love the little panel in the middle to “avoid uni-boob”!
Here are the two best things about this set. The soft, stretchy fabric, made of cotton, spandex and microfiber, makes it perfect for wearing to yoga (or any sport). Even hot yoga, which is my new favourite thing. It wicks away moisture. Secondly, though it’s not the stretched out beige nursing bra I described at the beginning of this post, I can still nurse in it. It’s easy to slip down to nurse, which if you ask Babe and Bug, is more important than anything! The coverage also comes up high under the arm, a feature important for mastitis prevention.
I’m starting to come around to the idea that self-care is very, very important. We can do it from the inside out. So, why not start with our underwear? We deserve it!
